Section – 42. Medical officer

(1) The appropriate Government may appoint medical practitioners with prescribed qualifications as medical officers for the purposes of this Code in relation to factories, mines, plantations, motor transport undertakings, and such other establishments as may be prescribed:

Provided that such medical officers shall disclose to the appropriate Government any interest they have in the concerned establishment before assuming office.

(2) The medical officer shall perform the following duties—
(a) examine and certify workers in mines, factories, or other prescribed establishments engaged in hazardous occupations or processes;
(b) provide medical supervision in factories, mines, plantations, motor transport undertakings, and other prescribed establishments where illnesses are suspected to be caused by workplace conditions or processes;
(c) examine and certify adolescents to determine their fitness for employment in factories, plantations, motor transport undertakings, or other prescribed establishments, especially in work that may be harmful to their health.
